Strength verses Technique. Is there an answer?
Want to start climbing or improve your grade, then you need to crank out those routes, that phase is always true because its addresses the hand on approach after all we learn fastest with a hands on approach,we are human after all.
Nothing else at the beginning will improve your abilities and skills as much.
But as soon as you can learn to increase your technique to use it to the best advantage that in time will see you able to use the strength you gain from climbing regular with the improvement in skill your technique will allow you to use.
I personally prefer the technique approach in as much that it gives me the skills to use the holds and i find out if i have the strength to pull them in a move, that way i can gauge the strength improvement i will need to train the next time i am at the gym or exercising.
The same could be said for strength but you have to realize it is the question that is wrong it should not be Strength verses Technique? but Strength or Technique which should you train first? and the answer would be either you have to workout which skill you are using the most at the moment and then enhance you routine in that direction.
And that will bring you full circle to the point that which ever you train it will get you to the rocks to test it out and you will be fulfilling the phrase “to climb better you need to climb”
Remember practise makes perfect.
